Early Beginnings

RRTOS and Fargo Theatre photos from the 1900s

Taken at a Silent Movie Night between 1974 and 1999. The movie shown was called "Wings," a drama/romance film from 1927 that takes place during World War I.

A point of interest in this photo is the original box office window and entrances on the left side of the photo. These were removed during the theatre's renovation/restoration in 1999/2000.

Here is another pre-renovation photograph taken before 1999. Notice how the vertical marquee meets the horizontal marquee. The connecting section was added when the marquee was "new" in the 1930s art deco renovation, and then later removed when the marquee was updated in 1999.

This photograph was taken sometime between 1973 and 1979. A few noticable changes between this photograph and the modern-day Fargo Theatre include the missing neon fountains, a patterend main curtain, a more decorative upper curtain, and the two-manual console. At the time the photograph was taken, the stage only came as far out as the proscenium arch. In front of the stage was the original orchestra pit and rails.

The Fargo Theatre's original 2-manual console. It had 7 ranks of pipes and was called a Style EX. The X denotes that the organ was installed in two chambers, instead of one (the standard for Style E models). While the organ console has been changed over the years, the original unaltered console is now on display in the theatre's mezzannine.

Lance Johnson at the Style E Wurlitzer. This photo was taken when the organ console was in it's original location in the Fargo Theatre. It was at the bottom left corner of the proscenium and was not on a lift.

One of the original 1926 hand-painted curtains at the Fargo Theatre. Before the theatre was remodeled into an art deco style in the 1930s, it was a Beaux Arts style that would have blended seamlessly with the front curtain.

The Fargo Theatre Wurlitzer was the featured instrument in the February/March 1981 Issue of the ATOS Theatre Organ Journal. The console pictured came from a church in Sioux Falls that had a "church" style Wurlitzer.
